What is Waste to Energy?
Waste to Energy (WTE) is an innovative process transforming heat energy from destroying waste materials into usable electrical energy. At our WTE facility, waste is collected, stored temporarily, and then incinerated in a high-temperature furnace. The heat generated from this process is used to boil water, producing steam. This steam drives turbines connected to generators, resulting in the production of electricity. To ensure environmental safety, gases produced during incineration are treated to remove pollutants, releasing only harmless vapour into the atmosphere. The remaining ash, significantly reduced in volume, can be safely disposed of in landfills or exported.
Project Objective
Barbados Port Inc. (BPI) is committed to becoming "The most innovative green maritime hub in the world by 2030." In line with this vision, we are replacing our aging incinerator with a modern Waste to Energy facility. This modern facility will not only handle the treatment of domestic and cruise waste but also generate electricity from the waste destruction process.
This project, funded by an IDB Invest loan, will enhance the Port’s waste treatment capacity and contribute to our energy needs. Crown Agents, with their extensive 185 years of international procurement experience, will oversee the procurement process, ensuring transparency and the best technical solutions while delivering value for money.
Project Site
The WTE facility will be constructed within the existing boundaries of the Port of Bridgetown on the west coast of Barbados. The main facility will occupy approximately 3,466 square meters, with additional space allocated for the contractor laydown area.
Project Description
The new facility is designed to process up to 42,000 cubic meters of waste annually. It will handle waste from cruise and cargo vessels, port operations, and commercial waste provided by agencies and businesses. During the peak cruise season (October to April), the facility will process up to 4,500 cubic meters of waste monthly and approximately 2,500 cubic meters during the low season.
A portion of the electricity generated by the process will power the facility itself (known as the parasitic load), while the excess electricity will be applied directly to the demands of the Port and contribute to the wider electricity network in Barbados.
General Plant Description
The WTE facility will include:
- Combustion equipment coupled with an energy recovery system, with a gross capacity of 0.9 megawatts (MW)
- Waste storage skip shed
- Tipping hall
